31 Weeks Pregnant | Pregnancy Week by Week

WEEK 31

How does the baby grow?

In this week, the baby’s length is over 40cm and weighs about 1.5kg (equivalent to the size of a coconut) and is starting to accelerate development. The baby can turn heads from side to side, arms, legs, and the body starts to become fuller thanks to the fat accumulated under the skin. The baby also moves a lot, kicks, and tumbles so it is difficult for moms to sleep. All these movements show that the baby is healthy and alert.

The baby was able to turn its head from side to side.

Changes occurring in the mother’s body during the 31st week of pregnancy

Now moms will notice that the muscles in the uterus sometimes tighten. Many women experience accidental contractions – called Braxton Hicks contractions – in the later stages of pregnancy. These contractions usually last about 30 seconds, infrequently and without pain. However, frequent contractions – both with and without pain – can be a sign of preterm labor. Call the doctor right away if moms have more than four contractions in an hour or any other signs of premature birth such as an increase in vaginal discharge or a change in fluid type, abdominal pain or tightness like menstruation; an increase in pressure in the pelvis, or low back pain, especially if moms have never had it before.

Besides, moms can notice that the breasts have recently leaked colostrum. This may not happen to some women; however, there’s nothing to worry about; the breasts are producing colostrum like other women, even if moms do not see any signs.

If the baby is a boy, moms and dads will need to think about whether or not circumcision for the baby.
