How does the baby grow?
The baby is continuing to grow and may now be about 51cm long and weigh about 3.6kg.
Although the womb is very cozy, the baby can not stay in it forever. For the baby’s safety, the doctor will talk to moms about labor induction if the baby is still not coming next week – or earlier if there are any other problems. Most doctors will not let moms wait longer than two weeks after the delivery date because that puts moms and the baby at high risk of complications. About 5-6% of women last their pregnancy more than three weeks or more than the expected delivery date. The baby born at the 42nd week or longer may have dry skin and are often overweight. Prolonged waiting also increases the risk of intrauterine infection, endangering the baby, or causing stillbirth. In addition, labor can be prolonged or delayed; both moms and babies are at risk of injury during childbirth and double the risk of having a cesarean section.
Changes occurring in the mother’s body during the 41st week of pregnancy
It’s hard not to worry when the delivery date comes and goes, and moms are still pregnant. But do not worry because moms will not be able to get pregnant forever. It is likely that moms will have labor in this week. If not, moms will be labored by the 42nd week or sooner.
The method of delivery that the doctor will use depends on the condition of the cervix. If the cervix is still not soft, thin, or dilated, it is considered not ready for labor. In that case, the doctor will use either hormone or use a “mechanical” method to get the cervix ready before stimulating labor. Sometimes, these measures will get labor started. Depending on the moms’ situation, the procedure may include stripping membranes or taking medications such as oxytocin (Pitocin) to start contractions. If the methods of giving birth are not effective, moms will be assigned a cesarean section.
In the meantime, tell the doctor right away if the baby’s movements slow down or if any fluid comes out from the vagina.
