Margaretha, a Yoruba woman from Africa, has recently given birth to twins. In the Yoruba culture, the delivery of twins is a joyous occasion that is frequently celebrated. It is common for Nigerian Yoruba women to give birth to twins at a greater rate than other ethnic groups.
Twins, the birth of two children from a single pregnancy, are a relatively rare occurrence, and as a result, they are frequently regarded as unique.The birth rate of twins differs by region and country across the globe. Latin America and Southeast Asia have the lowest rates of twin births, with approximately 9 sets per 1,000 births.
In Europe, approximately 16 twins are born per 1,000 births, while in the United States, approximately 33 twins are born per 1,000 births.
And in central Africa, the proportion rises to between 18 and 30 pairs of twins per 1,000 births.
However, the Yoruba people of southwest Nigeria have the highest rate of twin births in the globe, with approximately 50 sets of twins per 1,000 births.
And in Yorubaland, one particular town appears to have the highest number of multiple births in the globe.Igbo Ora, a sleepy agricultural town 80 kilometres from Lagos, is undoubtedly the twin capital of the world, with 158 sets of twins per 1,000 live births, according to unconfirmed estimates.
At the entrance to the city, visitors are greeted by a large plinth that openly proclaims its status as “the land of twins.”
While there is no empirical reason for the high incidence of twin births in the town surrounding Yorubaland, fertility experts believe that the consumption of a specific type of yam containing a natural phytoestrogen, which is believed to stimulate a woman’s ovaries to release eggs from each side, may be a possible explanation.
Locals and residents of Igbo Ora claim that the secret to their multiple births lies in their staple diet, which consists of okra leaf and yam.
A community leader stated in a 2013 interview, “We eat a lot of okra leaf or Ilasa broth. Additionally, we consume a great deal of yam, and these diets influence multiple births.”Almost every household in Igbo Ora, Oyo State, contained a pair of identical twins.
