A Miraculous Separation: Conjoined 9-Month-Old Twins Successfully Separated in Extraordinary Surgery at UC Davis
In what medical professionals are hailing as a groundbreaking surgery, conjoined twins Micaela and Abigail Bachinskiy have been successfully separated at UC Davis Children’s Hospital in Sacramento. The 24-hour surgery, performed by the medical staff at the hospital, marks a remarkable milestone in the field of pediatric surgery.
The 9-month-old twins, born conjoined at the head in a rare condition known as craniopagus twins, are now in the recovery phase while their parents, Liliya Miroshnik and Anatoliy Bachinskiy, express their gratitude for the successful outcome. The UC Davis Hospital issued a press release highlighting the significance of the surgery and the team effort involved in ensuring the twins have the best chances for a healthy life ahead.
Dr. Michael Edwards, lead pediatric neurosurgeon, described the operation as a milestone for UC Davis Children’s Hospital, adding that Abigail and Micaela are doing well and recovering in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The medical team is dedicated to providing them with optimal care and support.
Mother Liliya Miroshnik, 33, expressed her relief and gratitude, stating that everything went well and that she initially felt it was almost impossible to separate her daughters. She attributed the successful outcome to the combined efforts of God, the doctors, and the nurses at UC Davis.
The journey began when Miroshnik learned about her daughters’ conjoined condition when she was 11 weeks pregnant. Despite the initial shock, she found comfort in her husband’s reassurance that they would get through it. Miroshnik received extensive prenatal care at UC Davis Fetal Care and Treatment Center, where she learned more about her daughters’ condition and prepared for their arrival.
UC Davis medical teams diligently prepared for the twins’ delivery by conducting numerous simulations and scenarios, anticipating the potential risks associated with the unique case. On December 30, Abigail and Micaela entered the world and were admitted to the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). After spending seven weeks in the NICU, the twins finally went home.
The successful separation of Abigail and Micaela is a testament to the exceptional expertise and dedication of the medical team at UC Davis Children’s Hospital. This milestone surgery offers hope for other families facing similar challenges and emphasizes the remarkable progress being made in the field of pediatric medicine.
As Abigail and Micaela continue to recover and grow, they are set to embark on their individual journeys, leaving behind an inspiring legacy of resilience and the triumph of medical innovation.
